Coeur d’Alene Little Leaguers win again

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. — For the second straight game, Coeur d’Alene brought hot bats to the Northwest Regional Little League tournament.

And when a 13-run, 11-hit attack is paired with dominant pitching, that’s a tough combination to beat.

The Gillette, Wyo., team found that out Monday night, as Coeur d’Alene’s 12-year-old All Stars scored the game’s first five runs, then four more in both the fifth and sixth innings to win 13-1 at Houghton Stadium in San Bernardino, Calif.

With the victory, Coeur d’Alene advances to face Montana’s state champion in a semifinal matchup at noon Thursday. The Billings, Mont., squad advanced with an 11-0 win over Juneau, Alaska, earlier Monday.

The dominant pitching was provided by Coeur d’Alene starter Christopher Reynolds, who threw a six-inning complete game, allowing only one hit and one walk while striking out 11 Wyoming hitters.

Wyoming’s only run was unearned, as Josh Lubben reached first in the fourth inning on a dropped third strike. A single by Mason Drube moved Lubben to third base, and he scored on a wild pitch.

Coeur d’Alene, on the other hand, scored runs and bashed out hits in bunches right from the start of the game.

The first five Cd’A hitters reached base in the first inning, with Cooper Smith’s RBI single and Austin DeBoer’s two-run double putting the Idahoans ahead 3-0.

In the third, Coeur d’Alene added to its lead. Smith and Braeden Newby set the table for two-out RBI singles from Jake Dannenberg and Alexander Currie, putting the visiting team ahead 5-0.

After Wyoming trimmed the lead to 5-1 in the bottom of the fourth, Coeur d’Alene put the game away in the next two innings.

Dannenberg’s RBI groundout began the scoring in the fifth inning, then two hit batsmen, three walks and an error plated three more runs, pushing the lead to 9-1.

Another bases-loaded walk gave Coeur d’Alene its first run in the sixth. With the bases loaded, Smith’s single drove in two more runs, and DeBoer’s RBI single concluded the scoring.

Eight Coeur d’Alene players tallied hits, and for the second straight game, the team committed no fielding errors.
