Van Tol tabs

Richardson as

Boise State baseball assistant

BOISE — The Boise State baseball program has hired its first assistant coach, bringing Hilton Richardson back to Boise, head coach Gary Van Tol announced. Richardson had been working in the Philadelphia Phillies organization since 2014, and also spent time as a member of the Bronco football team during the 2011-12 seasons.

Richardson, a 2014 graduate of Boise State with a degree in criminal justice, was a seventh-round selection of the Kansas City Royals in the 2007 Major League Baseball June Amateur Draft. Originally from Kirkland, Wash. (Lake Washington High School), Richardson played in 323 games over the course of five seasons for minor league affiliates of the Royals and Atlanta Braves.

Following the conclusion of his professional baseball career, Richardson walked on to the Boise State football team, despite having never played the sport. He was part of the team for two seasons before leaving to focus on finishing his degree and getting back into baseball.

The Boise State baseball program is slated to return to the diamond for the 2020 season, the Broncos’ first since 1980.
