ST. GEORGE, Utah — Freshman Abby Gray doubled in Jalyssa Beamer with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning, lifting the Lake City Timberwolves past Stansbury of Erda, Utah, 2-1 in their first game Saturday at the March Warm Up Elite Tournament.

Beamer led off the second by getting hit by a pitch, was sacrificed to second by Abby Jankay, and scored on Gray’s shot to left field.

Beamer scored both runs for Lake City, both times after being hit by pitches. Ashley Kaufman struck out eight for Lake City.

“Stanbury was previously undefeated in the tourney, and that hit (by Gray) propelled us into another quality win over Springville,” Lake City coach Jesse Lenz said.

The Timberwolves then totaled 11 hits in a 9-3 victory over Springville (Utah). Emma Gray went 2 for 3 with a 3-run homer in the sixth inning for Lake City, and she also scored two runs. Kaufman went 3 for 4 with two RBIs, and also struck out nine and gave up two hits in 4 1/3 innings. Olivia Zufelt scored three runs.

Lake City finished 4-1 in the season-opening tournament.

“Another great day on the dirt,” Lenz said. “We continued to learn and played some quality opponents who made us better for the season to come. ... AK (Ashley Kaufman) continued to throw the ball extremely well and we had different people step up at the plate. We are excited for the snow to melt so we can continue to play ball.”

Lake City is scheduled to play host to Lewis and Clark on Friday.
