Helen Tallen Proctor, 95, devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, passed away gracefully at home on Saturday June 17, 2017.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m Monday, Sept. 18 at the Calvary Episcopal Church at 123 S. Ninth St., followed by a reception at the church.
She was born on Jan. 5, 1922, in Moberly, Missouri, to Catherine Haralambopoulos and William George Telonis (Americanized to Tallen), who immigrated from Greece to America. Her older brother, George William Tallen and younger sister, Maria Tallen Nardo preceded her in death.
Helen grew up in Moberly, Missouri, as a member of the Greek Orthodox Church, and graduated from Moberly Junior College. She worked at and attended the University of Missouri in Columbia.
On New Yearís Eve 1945, Helen, described as a Grecian beauty, met Earl Leslie Proctor, who had just returned from active duty in WWII. They were married on June 30, 1946, in the Calvary Episcopal Church in Columbia.
Helen is remembered, above all, for her total and selfless love and devotion to Earl for 70 years until his passing in January 2017, as well as to her daughter, Sandy Proctor Osborn and granddaughter, Melissa Proctor Osborn, M.D. First and foremost was commitment to family. In addition to working as a Realtor in Columbia for several years, she supported Earl in all of his business, community and social endeavors. In order to participate with him, she learned how to play golf and to trout fish, which they enjoyed together for many years. To his surprise and delight, she was the one who landed a sailfish while deep sea fishing in Florida!
She was proud to be a charter member in 1948 of The Cecile Taylor Circle of Kingís Daughters. An active member for over 50 years, Helen served two terms as President. She was in the original Kingís Daughters project group who needlepointed kneelers for the Calvary Episcopal Church. In addition, she produced many beautiful needlepoint creations such as pillows, seat cushions, framings, and rugs for her home and family.
Survivors include daughter, Sandy Proctor Osborn and granddaughter, Melissa Proctor Osborn, M.D. of Texas ; sister-in-law, Phyllis Bunge and husband, Carl, of Florida; niece Cheri Pappas of Georgia; nephew Craig Bunge of Georgia; niece Tina Proctor of Colorado; niece Catherine Tallen of Massachusetts, nephew Bill Tallen of Wyoming, nephew Don Nardo of Massachusetts, and nephew Philip Nardo of California.
