Mary Virginia Schmidtlein (nee Holland), fortified with the Sacraments of Holy Mother Church, died peacefully at home on Sunday, September 10, 2017. Visitation Saturday, Sept. 16, 9 to 10:45 a.m. followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Lourdes, 903 Bernadette Drive, Columbia, MO 65203. Interment at St. Francis Xavier Cemetery in Jerseyville, Ilinois, on Monday, Sept. 18, 2017, at 1 p.m.

She was born Dec. 2, 1927, in St. Louis to Paul and Norma (Stanton) Holland. Her family moved from St. Louis to Salt Hill Farm in Delhi, Illinois, in 1929. She graduated from Jerseyville High School in 1945 and received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the College of St. Teresa in Winona, Minnesota. She attended St. Louis University where she studied for her Master’s Degree in Medieval French. Mary moved to Columbia in 1949 and taught French and Spanish at Hickman High School for nine years. In 1956, she was elected President of the Columbia Teachers’ Association. She was a consummate teacher both in and out of the classroom.

Mary was a devout Catholic and an active member of Sacred Heart Church and later, Our Lady of Lourdes Parish, where she attended daily Mass and served as a lector. She was a Lady of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem. She held many positions in her parish and in the diocese of Jefferson City.

Mary was a true Francophile, loving all things French and was fiercely proud of her Irish heritage. She was a self-taught oenologist and began a wine club with dear friends from Stephens College and the University of Missouri. She was an avid bridge player, loved doing crossword puzzles and playing Scrabble. Mary was a wonderful cook and loved to entertain.

Above all else, Mary was a devoted and loving wife, mother and grandmother. She married Eugene Francis Schmidtlein on Aug. 17, 1957. Mary and Gene recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.

Mary is survived by her husband; daughters, Mary Rhodes (James), Norma, and Rachel Puschel (William); and grandchildren Matthew, Andrew, John and Mary Clare Rhodes and Will and Anna Puschel. She was preceded in death by her parents, and brothers, Edward, Jack, Paddy, George and Joe. She is also survived by many loving nieces, and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, Masses preferred. Memorials to Our Lady of Lourdes Interparish School, 817 Bernadette Drive, Columbia, MO 65203.
