I read Rich Landers’ article in The Press Thursday morning about water safety and fatalities on Washington and Idaho waters, which seemed so on target with something I experienced last week.
On Monday, we took my visiting grandson to meet the boat that shuttles campers over to Camp Sweyolaken on Mica Bay. We were dismayed to see that the campers (starting at age 5) did not have on life vests. We contacted Campfire USA in Spokane, and they referred us to the Camp Sweyolaken director, no response.
I called the sheriff’s department. They referred me to the Kootenai County marine patrol, no response. Looking up Idaho law, it says children 14 and younger must wear a flotation device on boats 19 feet or shorter — that’s it. Where is the common sense in this? Shame on Camp Sweyolaken for not practicing better boating safety.
