LEGION BASEBALL: Lums 17U out at regionals

EUGENE, Ore. — Coeur d’Alene Lumbermen 17U coach Pat Capone called his team the most resilient group of players he’s coached.

And they were that again on Saturday in the Northwest American Legion A baseball tournament at Swede Johnson Stadium, rallying to take a 3-2 lead in the eighth inning.

But the team’s season came to an end as Hector Capetillo hit a walk-off double as the Nampa Braves beat the Lumbermen 4-3 in 10 innings in a loser-out game.

“This is a really special group,” Capone said. “We’ve got at least four Division I players on this team, and everyone on this roster has the chance to play at the next level.”

Quinton Bunch had two hits and an RBI for Coeur d’Alene, which finishes 47-13. Carter Friesz and Devon Johnson also had RBIs for Coeur d’Alene.

“It was one of those games where we fought back and forth the entire way,” Capone said. “It was two good ballclubs going at it.”

Coeur d’Alene beat Nampa twice last week to capture the Idaho state title, with one win coming on a walk-off single.

“We were really good on the field,” Capone said. “But we were even better off the field. They’re a very resilient group of kids.”
